Rocklin, A City With No Downtown

Rocklin City Manager Declares No Downtown Until 2028!!!

“It’s kind of like a big smile with a gap in the teeth”, Says Todd Lowell, Chairman for the Rocklin Area Chamber of Commerce about Rocklin's downtown.

You would never know by looking at Rocklin’s downtown that our city played a very important part in our state’s and our country’s history. The first railroad roundhouse was built in our city 150 years ago and was instrumental in opening up the West. Rocklin’s granite quarries have helped to build the city of Sacramento and San Francisco.

What has our current city council done in the last 25 years to develop the "heart and soul" of our city?

Historic Front Street, once a bustling town 150 years ago is virtually vacant. Most citizens refer to the downtown as a 'blight.

Why has there been no effort by Vice Mayor Peter Hill who has been in the city council for 25 years or Council member Kathy Lund who has been in office for over 20 years, or Council member George Magnuson who has been in office for over 17 years or our 10 year vetran, Mayor Brett Storey.

Why has this city council been able to approve strip mall after strip mall and one housing development after another and not think about bringing to life Rocklin's historic downtown?

In 1997, St. Mary’s, Rocklin’s oldest standing building, was offered for free to the Rocklin City Council on the condition that they would move the structure from the owner's property. The council’s answer was ‘NO’ to preserving this 120 year old structure.

Later, because a group of dedicated Rocklin residents, who stood up and fought to save and restore Rocklin’s oldest church, we are able to enjoy a part of Rocklin history that would have been destroyed.

Because of the indifference of the current city council we do not have a downtown and our city manager indicates there will be no downtown until 2028. This date is unacceptable!

Its Time for a Change and a city council that will listen to it's constituents - Remove Petter Hill, Brett Storey and George Magnuson in November

    Stop Valley View Parkway

Valley View Parkway is a cross town highway that connects highways 80 and 65, bringing 14,000 vehicles a day into our city. This highway will be used by people who do not even live in Rocklin. Valley View Parkway will be used it as a short cut- cars will race by our schools, parks and retirement communities. The heart of Rocklin, Park Drive will be severely impacted. We do not need another 14,000 cars a day added to our streets and neighborhoods. Why does this current city council insist on this traffic nightmare, that degrades our way of life???

Solution: We can elect new city council members who can remove this road from the Rocklin General Plan by a simple majority vote of our City Council. This simple solution will help to maintain our way of life and stop thousands of vehicles a day from entering our streets.

We do not need more traffic in Rocklin – Remove the incumbents

Measure J, Rocklin's Parks Measure is Defeated - City Council Fails to Endorse or Campaign to Help the Measure that would Provide Money to Maintain Rocklin's 27 Parks

Mayor Storey indicates they will, ‘look at lowering our costs through reduced maintenace or CLOSURE/conversion (of our parks) into open space areas’

Not one of our elected city council persons endorsed the Measure that would ensure our 27 parks would continue to be maintained for years to come for the resident of Rocklin.

While the Parks Measure went down to defeat our city council sat silent and let it happen. Instead this city council – Mayor Bret Storey (10 Years in Office), Vice Mayor Peter Hill (25 Years in Office), Council member Kathy Lund (20 years), council member Scott Yuill and Council member George Magnuson (17 Years in office) spent their time and efforts supporting and openly endorsing the cause of a wealthy developer who wanted to defeat the effort to save Clover Valley. Where was our city council's support for a measure that will maintain our parks?

--Mayor Storey spent his efforts recording radio interviews and robo calls for a wealthy developer to help the Yes on Measure H campaign. Why didn't Mayor Storey speak out in favor of Rocklin's parks during the last election?

--Mayor Storey, Peter Hill, George Magnuson, Kathy Lund Scott Yuill and George Magnuson put their personal endorsement on 3 mass mailers sent out to the residents of Rocklin containing deceptive information and blatant lies all to the benefit of a wealthy developer to ensure Measure H would pass and our open spaces would be built over. Where was our city's council's public endorsement of ensuring our parks are kept safe for our children?

--Peter Hill and Kathy Lund spent their efforts holding 3 advertised, public meetings for the Yes on H campaign. Why didn't Vice Mayor Hill and Council Person Kathy Lund hold advertised, public meetings to maintain and keep our parks safe for Rocklin Families?

--Peter Hill and Mayor Storey spent their efforts writing op-eds and letters to the endorsing the Yes on Measure H. Mayor Storey and Vice Mayor Hill made no effort at all to inform the people of Rocklin through ed-ops or letters to the editor about the importance of voting in favor of Measure J and keeping our parks maintained.

Now Mayor Storey indicates they will ,"look at lowering our costs through reduced maintenace or closure/conversion (of Rocklin's parks)into open space areas’

The current city government, especially the Rocklin City Council gave active support to a private developer's return on investment. This development group wasn't building a hospital, school or library benefiting the entire community. They are developing Clover Valley for THEIR individual benefit and Rocklin's City council lent their names and public titles to that effort. The parks issue was lost while our city council was dutiful doing the bidding of a wealthy developer and his Yes on H campaign.
